Cognitive-Communication Deficits with Post-COVID Conditions: Best Practices for SLPs
In this course, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) will learn about cognitive-communication deficits associated with post-COVID conditions (also known as long COVID) and how to effectively evaluate and treat these deficits. Best practices for evaluating cognitive-communication deficits in this population and evidence-based treatment strategies, including how to teach energy conservation strategies to maximize patient participation, are demonstrated using clinical scenarios. Strategies for patient and caregiver engagement and education and an interprofessional team approach to improve outcomes are presented.

Subject Matter Expert: Emory Roper, M.Ed, CCC-SLPSusan Almon-Matangos, MS, CCC-SLP, is a certified and licensed speech-language pathologist with over 40 years of experience. She earned her bachelor's degree in psychology from Jacksonville State University and her Master of Science degree in speech-language pathology from The University of Alabama. She has provided care to clients across the lifespan with diverse diagnostic conditions in school, hospital, skilled nursing facility, outpatient clinic, and home health settings. In her previous role as a national clinical director for a contract therapy company, she developed training programs for physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology focusing on clinical rehabilitation needs of older adults in post-acute care. Currently, she serves as the Lead Subject Matter Expert Writer for Speech-Language Pathology at Relias, where she leverages her clinical expertise and analysis of published research. She is a certified member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and the Pennsylvania Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
Emory Roper, M.Ed., CCC-SLP, is a certified and licensed speech-language pathologist who obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Virginia. He worked in the inpatient rehabilitation setting and served as a clinical leader of a stroke recovery unit. He then relocated to North Carolina and transitioned to working in an outpatient rehabilitation clinic, where he enjoys providing person-centered care and helping individuals meet their goals. He has been a guest lecturer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, educating graduate speech-language pathology students about fatigue management in concussions and Long COVID.
