This bundle is designed for physical and occupational therapists working with patients suffering from balance disorders, falls, movement disorders, dizziness, or vertigo. It will cover the anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system, the inner ear, oculomotor and somatosensory systems, medical assessments and treatments, and the quality of life of affected older adults.
Therapists will be equipped with evidence-based standardized tests to assess their patients’ risk for falls. These tests will help therapists identify specific impairments that cause balance disorder and provide specific treatment options that can be incorporated into the treatment regimen.
With the shift toward routine incorporation of trauma-informed care in healthcare settings, many professionals are aware of the key components of this approach. However, in the midst of busy day-to-day clinical work, it can be easy to lose sight of the true impact of trauma-informed care on the individual receiving services. For an organization to be trauma-informed they need to realize the widespread impact of trauma, recognize the signs and symptoms of trauma, and respond by integrating knowledge about trauma into policies, procedures, and practices in an effort to resist re-traumatizing clients (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration [SAMHSA], 2014). The person’s relationship with the environment is as important as their social relationships. Clients’ bodies have immediate responses to the spaces that they are in and the people with whom they interact. For those who have experienced trauma, their body signals a physiological stress response when in environments that feel unsafe. The environment can heighten the body’s stress response or calm it (Grabowska et al., 2021).
This course will provide you with an immersive experience of trauma-informed care from a client's perspective. You will be able to directly experience the impact of both an adherence to trauma-informed principles, as well as the effects of compromised trauma-informed care delivery.
The goal of this course is to provide Addictions, Behavioral Health Counseling, Case Management/Care Management, Marriage and Family Therapy, Nursing, Physicians, Psychology, and Social Work Professionals in healthcare settings with information on how to promote a trauma-informed care environment.
This course is designed to increase your awareness of the client’s perspective on trauma-informed practices. To learn about specific strategies that you and your organization can implement to deliver trauma-informed care, see the courses on this topic in the Relias library.
Documentation is a critical component of therapy services. Your documentation is used to communicate with other healthcare professionals, evaluate the effectiveness of treatment, and substantiate billing by justifying the care provided. Individuals who review your documentation in the medical record will never see the therapy sessions, so you have to “tell the story” by including the necessary components to justify services for reimbursement. This course covers general guidelines for documentation, components to improve documentation, and special considerations. Practical examples are provided to help you incorporate best practices into your documentation.
Suicide was the 12th leading cause of death in 2020 in the United States. People with bipolar disorder, depression, and schizophrenia spectrum disorder and adolescents, older adults, and military veterans are at high risk. Stressors in the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, including social isolation, worsening mental health, economic insecurity, and disruptions at work and school, have led to concerns that suicide rates will significantly rise. This course provides physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology professionals with information about the issue of suicide, screening and identification strategies, and actions to take if someone screens positive. This course fulfills the 3-hour suicide prevention training requirement for the state of Washington.
