Many people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, or IDD, receive services from a speech-language pathologist, or SLP. As a direct support professional, or DSP, you may need to support a person to participate in SLP services. You may also need to help the therapist understand the person's needs. In this course, you will learn about what speech-language pathology is and how it can benefit the people you support. You will also learn how an SLP's services generally work and what you can do to maximize the benefit to the people you serve.

Susan Almon-Matangos, MS/CCC-SLP, is a certified and licensed speech-language pathologist with over 30 years of experience. She obtained her bachelor's degree in psychology from Jacksonville State University and her Master of Science degree in speech-language pathology from The University of Alabama. She worked with clients of all ages and a variety of diagnostic conditions in school, hospital, skilled nursing facility, outpatient clinic, and home health settings. In her previous role as a national clinical director for a large contract therapy company, she created training programs for physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology related to the clinical rehabilitation needs of older adults in post-acute care.
