In recent years, children have been exposed to increasing incidences of mass violence in their schools and communities. Their lives have been upended by the global COVID-19 pandemic and record incidences of natural disasters. Children have been frightened by domestic terrorism. They have been overwhelmed by civil unrest and racial injustice. Children exposed to traumatic events and disasters are particularly vulnerable to complicated physical and emotional responses, in part due to their limited life experiences. Adults working with children facing these situations must understand how children react to trauma. They must learn how to discern adaptive coping responses from those requiring more intervention. In this course, you will learn how trauma impacts children and adolescents. You will also learn the risk factors that place children in greater jeopardy for maladaptive responses to the event. You will learn to recognize typical responses by age and when to seek professional help.
Delivery Format: Reading Based Asynchronous Distance Learning
