LGBTQ+ children and youth are like other children and youth, but they face unique challenges and discrimination. Families, caregivers, providers, and educators can all play a role in fostering positive development, healthy coping skills, and resilience in LGBTQ+ children and youth. Families’ culture, historical traditions, and belief systems can be assets in resilience building.

In this course, you will receive basic information on gender and sexual identities in LGBTQ+ children and youth to better inform your practice. The course will also discuss the effects of institutional, cultural, and social discrimination on LGBTQ+ youth as well as the impact of complex trauma. It will explore assessment practices, treatment models and methods for building resilience in LGBTQ+ children and youth.

The goal of this course is to provide behavioral health counseling, addictions, marriage and family therapy, psychology, and social work professionals with information and strategies to better support LGBTQ+ children and youth.
