Laboratory testing is one of the most effective and fiscally responsible tools available to diagnosticians. Small changes in expected lab values may indicate a much larger change in your patient’s status, especially in cases of acid-base imbalance. The ability to identify abnormal results, their pathophysiological significance, and monitor/treat the underlying cause is critical to ensure the highest level of care for patients. Armed with the knowledge and confidence to identify abnormal lab values related to acid-base balance, you will have an opportunity to expedite treatment and improve patient outcomes.
