TBI & Older Adults: Cognition and Communication Impairments

Older adults commonly present with cognition and communication impairments due to either a recent traumatic brain injury (TBI) impacting function or the cognitive changes of aging with previous TBI. This course uses a series of case studies to describe the common clinical presentations of each type of older adult with TBI, appropriate goals, expected progression, and evidence-based interventions to integrate into a plan of care. Clinicians will learn best practices for assessment and management of this population and considerations for comorbidities that can influence recovery.

Karen is a Speech-Language Pathologist with more than 30 years’ experience in a variety of medical settings, including acute care, subacute care, skilled nursing, and home health. She received her B.A. in English and Developmental Psychology from the University of California at Santa Barbara, and her M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology from Rutgers. She currently resides in Santa Barbara, California and works in home health. Wendy holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Florida State University in Biology, as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy from Florida A&M University. She has more than 25 years of experience working as a Physical Therapist in multiple care settings, including acute care, inpatient rehab, independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, and outpatient orthopedics. Wendy has a strong manual therapy background and has completed additional training in McConnell taping, geriatric care, McKenzie MDT, Maitland Mobilizations for the joints and spine. She is most passionate about using her manual skills to improve mobility and reduce pain in individuals of all ages.
