Historically, restraint and seclusion have been used throughout education and treatment settings. The decision to use these procedures has often been driven by a legitimate concern for the safety of those being supported, others in the vicinity, and the staff who provide support and intervention. This is particularly true as a last resort measure in crisis behavior situations. However, there have been negative ramifications from their use. Restraint and seclusion cause physical and psychological consequences not only for individuals who experience them, but also for the staff involved. They can also create risks to the agencies when used. Supervisors can play a key role in reducing the use of supervision and restraint with clients and staff. Implementing alternative strategies can aid in the elimination of unnecessary incidents of restraint and seclusion. By integrating these strategies into your organization, supervisors can create treatment environments that are positive and effective in meeting the needs of their clientele while successfully reducing the use of restraint and seclusion. The goal of this course is to teach addiction, behavioral health counseling, marriage and family therapy, psychology, social work, and nursing professionals about strategies supervisors can use to reduce restraint and seclusion in their organizations.
