Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is a relatively rare disorder in which the immune system attacks the nervous system. Patients with GBS are often referred to speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to address symptom management and impairments in speech and swallowing. SLPs who complete this course will understand the disease process and be able to describe common clinical presentations, progression, and expected outcomes. Evidence-based treatment strategies are also presented.

Susan Almon-Matangos, MS, CCC-SLP, is a certified and licensed speech-language pathologist with over 30 years of experience. She obtained her bachelor's degree in psychology from Jacksonville State University and her Master of Science degree in speech-language pathology from The University of Alabama. She worked with clients of all ages and a variety of diagnostic conditions in school, hospital, skilled nursing facility, outpatient clinic, and home health settings. In her previous role as a national clinical director for Aegis Therapies, she created training programs for physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology related to the clinical rehabilitation needs of older adults in post-acute care. She currently draws upon her expertise in her role at Relias as Lead Subject Matter Expert Writer for Speech-Language Pathology. She worked in a variety of settings before finding a forever home in the acute care hospital setting where she has been for nearly 10 years. She is thoroughly experienced in performing and interpreting instrumental swallow assessments (MBSS and FEES); writing and presenting clinical education material for colleagues, peers, and graduate students; and supervising and training graduate students. She also enjoys contributing to the acute care and speech-language pathology fields as a consultant and medical editor.
