PT/OT/SLP: An Overview of Substance Use Disorders in Older Adults
As the older adult population increases, so does the number of older adults needing treatment for a variety of substance use disorders (SUDs). This course is designed to provide rehabilitation therapists with a fundamental understanding of the impact of aging on how SUDs present, are diagnosed, and are assessed by interdisciplinary professionals. You will identify your role in recognizing SUDs, risk and protective factors, the effects of aging on patterns of drinking and medication use, and age-related physiological changes that impact the development of SUDs.

Instructor: Jacob Helton, Psy.D.Christopher Meketansky OTR/L graduated from Stony Brook University in 2017 with a Master of Science Degree in Occupational Therapy. He received training in manual therapy, specialized treatment for individuals with degenerative neurological disorders and post-stroke neurorehabilitation. He has worked in skilled nursing and home healthcare settings with experience treating patients with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, balance impairments, and a myriad of other conditions impacting the older adult population.
Jacob Helton, Psy.D., received his doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from Marywood University in Pennsylvania. He completed his pre-doctoral internship at Chehalem Youth and Family Services in Newberg, Oregon, which included extensive training with at-risk youth and their families. He is licensed as a psychologist in Oregon and most recently worked in an integrated family medicine and internal medicine group for a large healthcare organization. Dr. Helton has worked in hospital, school, residential, and community mental health settings. He has provided treatment to clients across the lifespan and diagnostic spectrum, with an emphasis on the treatment of anxiety disorders, co-occurring medical and mental health disorders, ADHD, insomnia, severe and persistent mental illness, and the aging. He has experience as a technical writer and has provided numerous trainings to mental health professionals, physicians, allied professionals, and direct care staff.
