Prescribing Assistive Devices for the Patient with Dementia
Determining if an assistive device (AD) will benefit a patient with dementia can be a challenge. Therapists must consider the whole person—What is their current level of cognitive and physical function? What level of physical support do they need? Would a mobility device actually INCREASE their risk of falling? Is there a better option? In this course, learners will explore this decision-making process to make evidence-based decisions for assistive devices for patients with dementia. Considerations for caregiver and interdisciplinary team training and interventions when an AD is not appropriate are presented.

Instructor: Lydia Kite, OTD, MOT, OTR/L, CAPSDr. Kaitlyn Cremer earned her Master of Occupational Therapy and Doctor of Occupational Therapy from the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences. During her doctorate work, she became a certified caregiver trainer for families caring for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, and she partnered with St. John’s county to provide services to families in need. Despite a diverse background, Dr. Cremer’s passion lies with the low vision population. She is devoted to aiding individuals to live as independently as possible despite vision impairment. In 2019, Dr. Cremer was acknowledged by AOTA for her achievement in obtaining a Specialty Certification in Low Vision. She is also a Certified Aging in Place Specialist which allows her to work on a team with general contractors and architects to create accessible housing for all populations. Dr. Cremer is passionate about the OT profession and teaching future clinicians the skills necessary to bring services to a variety of populations.
Dr. Lydia Kite has experience in a variety of settings including skilled nursing facilities, subacute rehabilitation, outpatient rehabilitation, long-term acute rehabilitation along with ergonomics, injury, and prevention. She earned her BA in Psychology from Georgia Southern University and then her Master of Occupational Therapy from University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences. She graduated with her Post-Professional Doctor of Occupational Therapy in 2021 with a capstone focusing on creating a sustainable relationship with community day programs for adults with intellectual disabilities.Instructor: Wendy Phillips, PT, BSPT
Wendy holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Florida State University in Biology, as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy from Florida A&M University. She has more than 25 years of experience working as a Physical Therapist in multiple care settings, including acute care, inpatient rehab, independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, and outpatient orthopedics. Wendy has a strong manual therapy background and has completed additional training in McConnell taping, geriatric care, McKenzie MDT, Maitland Mobilizations for the joints and spine. She is most passionate about using her manual skills to improve mobility and reduce pain in individuals of all ages. As a Lead Physical Therapy writer for Relias, Wendy enjoys being able to combine her clinical knowledge with her interest in research and staying up-to-date with changes and advances in the field of rehabilitation.
