PREA Pt 3: Understanding Reporting Obligations and Retaliation Protections

Green Clock Hours: 1.50

This course covers content required by the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) National Standards for employee training. Specifically, this course will discuss content related to reporting requirements and retaliation protections in sexual abuse and sexual harassment situations.

PREA is a federal law established in 2003 to prevent, detect, and respond to sexual abuse and sexual harassment in correctional systems. The National Standards to Prevent, Detect, and Respond to Prison Rape (PREA National Standards) are a compilation of best practices and nationally accepted correctional practices to prevent, detect, and respond to sexual abuse and sexual harassment in correctional settings.

The goal of this course is to provide staff working in adult correctional facilities who have direct contact with people in custody with information to help them understand their responsibilities related to reporting incidents of sexual abuse and sexual harassment in correctional facilities and protecting people from retaliation. Look for other courses in the Relias library that discuss an overview of PREA and the PREA National Standards and the dynamics of sexual abuse in juvenile correctional facilities.

A large portion of the information for this course was sourced from the National Standards to Prevent, Detect, and Respond to Prison Rape under the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA).
