PREA Pt 1: Overview for Juvenile Correctional Facilities

Green Clock Hours: 1.25

This course offers an overview for officers working in juvenile correctional facilities of the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) and PREA National Standards definitions of sexual abuse and sexual harassment, and the consequences you could incur from failing to follow the PREA-related policies and procedures set forth by your agency. Youth held in correctional facilities have always had the right to be protected from sexual abuse while confined. Employees, contractors, and volunteers in confinement facilities have always had the ethical responsibility to prevent, detect, and respond to the sexual abuse and sexual harassment of juveniles in custody. The passage of PREA and the implementation of the PREA National Standards have allowed correctional facilities to standardize definitions and processes and establish a zero-tolerance policy for instances of sexual abuse and sexual harassment in their facilities. The goal of this course is to give correctional officers working in juvenile correctional facilities an overview of the Prison Rape Elimination Act and the PREA National Standards to Prevent, Detect, and Respond to Prison Rape. Look for other courses in the Relias library about PREA and the dynamics of sexual abuse and sexual harassment and reporting obligations and retaliation protections. There are also other courses in the Relias library that discuss PREA related to adult correctional facilities.
