Hospital-acquired conditions are costly and harmful to patients, especially Medicare patients. To tackle this, the HAC Reduction Program was created to improve patient safety by reducing preventable HACs in hospitals. CMS ties Medicare payments to hospital quality and reduces payments for those that do not meet HAC measures. While there have been significant advancements in the creation of safety bundles for preventing surgical site infections, they still make up 20% of all hospital-acquired infections (NHSN, 2023a).
