Implicit bias refers to the attitudes or stereotypes about a person or group that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious manner. Prejudice is a predetermined opinion that is not based on reason or experience.
Behavioral health providers and clients can have implicit bias or prejudice that affects the therapeutic relationship, diagnosis, and treatment. This podcast introduces stories and strategies that providers can use to address implicit bias and prejudices.

Subject Matter Expert: Amanda Gayle, Ph.D.
Amanda Gayle received her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Tennessee. She completed a pre-doctoral internship at the University of Georgia in the Counseling and Testing Center. She also completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Duke University Medical Center in the Occupational Health Department working in both the internal and external employee assistance programs. She is licensed in North Carolina where she was in private practice for 15 years serving primarily adults in individual and couples counseling with many presenting issues. Her focus was on cognitive behavioral therapy to treat anxiety, mood disorders, grief, relationship difficulties, stress management, self-esteem, and parenting. She joined Relias as a subject matter expert writer for behavioral health in 2021.Subject Matter Expert: Sara Seidel Beall, NCC, LCMHC
Sara received her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from New College of Florida and Master’s degree in Community Counseling from Appalachian State University. Sara is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor and Sara has over 20 years of behavioral health counseling experience, including for profit, non-profit and private practice work. Sara is the Product Manager for Behavioral Health, and she has been with Relias since 2015.
