Asthma is a chronic, complex disorder characterized by reversible airflow obstruction, inflammation, and bronchial hyper-reactivity to irritants, chemicals, allergens, or even exercise. It affects millions of people daily, in all walks of life, and it frequently contributes to healthcare visits and missed school and work days.
Asthma can be well-controlled if the ordering practitioner is familiar with the diagnosis and management of asthma, during both acute exacerbations and long-term management. For the goals of management to be met, patients with asthma must be well-educated about their medications and engaged in medical decision-making. Additionally, they must know how to measure lung function at home and when to report changes in condition. Using a collaborative approach, patients with asthma can live a normal, productive life.
The goal of this course is to refresh knowledge of asthma medications for healthcare professionals in acute care settings.
