In the preoperative setting, providers use advanced skills and critical thinking to effectively prepare patients for surgery. Nursing skills include identifying risk factors, establishing a plan of care, providing education about the surgical experience, and performing interventions to minimize risks. A key element of preoperative care is collecting, analyzing, and transferring important information to all members of the surgical team. According to Malley et al. (2015), the degree to which information is effectively communicated between perioperative phases and providers is critical for preventing patient harm. However, one study revealed that only about 27% of important medical information is known and understood among all members of the surgical team.
The goal of this course is to educate nurses and CSTs on the significance of collecting and using preoperative data throughout the perioperative phase.
