Perioperative Series: Principles of Operative Technique

There is no gray area when it comes to sterility in the OR; it is either sterile or it is not! While this concept may seem strict, it is a MUST for establishing and maintaining a sterile field. The actions of any member of the OR team can contaminate the sterile field, so your movements must be thoughtful. This course reviews operative techniques that encompass a wide variety of methods and practices.
The goal of this course is to equip nurses and STs in the OR with knowledge of sterile and operative techniques.

Subject Matter Expert: Brandy Verton, BSN, RN, CNOR
Instructor: Brian C Sheridan, CSTBrandy graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Capella University. She is a certified perioperative nurse with versatile skillsets in the circulator and scrub roles for an array of surgical specialties. She fulfilled numerous nursing leadership responsibilities as the Surgical Services Clinical Educator and Periop 101 instructor for UNC REX Healthcare located in NC. She has been an active member of several hospital committees and contributed to numerous process improvement initiatives. She developed her core nursing skills early in her career while working on a postoperative and medical-surgical overflow unit where she served in a variety of roles, including charge nurse, preceptor, Magnet Champion, and admission/discharge facilitator. She currently works as a perioperative SME and course writer at Relias.
Brian is an accomplished certified surgical technologist with over 15 years of experience. He graduated cum laude on the Dean’s list for outstanding academic achievement with a certificate in Surgical Technology from Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania. He is well-versed in a variety of specialties including multi-surgeon complex cancer cases. As a preceptor, he enjoys sharing his knowledge with new surgical technologists and nurses, teaching them the fundamentals of the scrub role. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Pennsylvania State Assembly of the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST).
