Overview of the 12 Step Model

Addiction is a treatable but complex disease. 12 step groups are a popular type of mutual aid group that can support a person’s recovery from addiction. Alcoholics Anonymous was the first 12 step group in the U.S.Unless a behavioral health professional is involved in a 12 step group themselves, they may have limited understanding of how 12 step groups work. The goal of this course is to provide addictions, behavioral health counseling, case/care management, marriage and family therapy, nursing, psychology, and social work professionals in health and human service settings with information about 12 step groups. This course uses the Alcoholics Anonymous steps as an example to teach about the nature of the 12 steps.

Jennifer received her Bachelor’s degrees in Social Work and Criminal Justice from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Master’s degree in Social Work with a Certificate in Substance Abuse Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has over 13 years of experience providing psychotherapy, counseling, and case management to a variety of populations.
