Children and adolescents handle medications differently than adults. The brains and bodies of children and adolescents are still growing and developing. Most psychiatric medications were studied for adults, and many have not been studied in the pediatric population and are not FDA-approved. Yet, these medications are commonly used despite lack of FDA approval; this is called “off-label prescribing.” Many of the medications used to treat child and adolescent mental health conditions are prescribed off-label. Some individuals may be more comfortable speaking with a mental health professional about their medications and any side effects. It is important for you to familiarize yourself with medications that are commonly used for youth. You will also be able to help clients and their guardians increase their knowledge and comfort with discussing concerns with providers.
