Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Stroke: Pathophysiology and Presentations

Cerebrovascular accidents (CVAs), or strokes, are a leading cause of death in the U.S. (Centers for Disease Control [CDC], 2021). Patient prognosis and the preservation of functional status are highly dependent on receiving prompt, timely treatment. A thorough understanding of stroke pathophysiology is crucial, as is assessing, diagnosing, and determining the appropriate plan of care. With this understanding, clinicians will be better equipped to make the best possible decisions in the provision of care for their patients.
The goal of this course is to inform physicians, EMS, and nursing professionals of the most current practice guidelines and treatment options for cerebrovascular accidents.

Dr. Daniel Migliaccio is currently a Clinical Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Director of Emergency Ultrasound as well as the Ultrasound Fellowship Director at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at Stanford University. During Residency, Dr. Migliaccio was able to obtain an Honors Certificate in Medical Education from the Clinical Teaching Scholars Honors Program. He was also fortunate enough to be able to focus on his ultrasound skills, leading to an award for Outstanding Achievement in Ultrasound. Dr. Migliaccio is passionate about medical education, point of care ultrasound, and optimizing patient care using current literature. He is currently board certified in point of care ultrasound with a Focused Practice Designation in advanced point of care ultrasound through the American Board of Emergency Medicine and is enthusiastic about promoting Emergency Medicine and patient care nationally.Instructor: Elizabeth Kellerman, MSN, RN
Elizabeth Kellerman, MSN, RN worked as a critical care nurse in an Intensive Care Unit of a community hospital and that experience provided significant training in caring for older adults. Her experience and knowledge led her to nursing education where she taught at a community college as she received her Master's in Nurse Education at Western Carolina University. As a nursing instructor, she spent time in many types of care settings including medical-surgical inpatient and community living centers. Her passion for education and training has most recently led her to a position as Subject Matter Expert and Curriculum Designer for Relias.
