Introduction to Co-Occurring Disorders

Hours: 1.25
Course Code: REL-BHC-ICOD

Many individuals who present to your organization for services are doubly challenged by the presence of both a substance use disorder and a mental health disorder. These co-occurring conditions are associated with greater symptom severity and poorer treatment outcomes (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration [SAMHSA], 2020). Treatment efforts are further complicated by the fact that many behavioral health professionals are insufficiently trained in assessing and treating these co-occurring disorders. The information included in this training includes prevalence data, strategies for identifying co-occurring disorders, and an introduction for effective engagement and treatment strategies for individuals with co-occurring disorders. The goal of this course is to provide addictions, behavioral health counseling, marriage and family therapy, nursing, psychology, and social work professionals working in health and human services settings with education regarding the nature and prevalence of co-occurring disorders, as well as strategies for engaging and treating people who live with co-occurring disorders.
