Substance use disorders result in problems such as failing to meet obligations at home, poor health, and spending time getting, using, or recovering from the effects of the substance (Lipari & Van Horn, 2017). Over 35 million people have a substance use disorder and their families are affected (World Health Organization [WHO], 2019). Children are four times more likely to develop alcohol use disorder if their parent has alcohol use disorder (Anda et al., 2002).
In this course, you will learn the fundamentals of the family systems approach that are essential for you to understand the complex dynamics of families struggling with the impact of substance use disorders. Vignettes and interactive exercises provide the opportunity to apply these concepts to expand your skillset working with families.
The goal of this course is to provide addictions, behavioral health counseling, marriage and family therapy, nursing, psychology, and social work professionals in health and human service settings with information about how substance use disorders can impact family systems and approaches to help the family system.
