Medical coding specialists use a set of nationally recognized rules and guidelines to select the correct codes for the diagnoses treated, services provided, and procedures performed. Although inpatient and outpatient coding are similar, clinical diagnoses and services are reported and reimbursed differently. This course provides information pertaining to coding outpatient diagnoses in physician practices and clinics, emergency departments, and other outpatient departments in hospitals. It provides an overview of the format and structure and the conventions and instructions in ICD-10-CM. Before beginning this lesson, you should have access to the most recent version of ICD-10-CM (International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification). Refer to the Resources section to find and download the necessary documents. The codes and information in this course receive a comprehensive review annually and are updated as needed.
