ELNEC Graduate Student Module 3: Pain Management in Palliative Care
Pain is understood through a holistic and multidimensional approach as a biopsychosocial and spiritual experience, requiring pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic therapies, as well as consultations with specialists (e.g., pain management, mental health, rehabilitation, complementary medicine, and chaplains). The module explores the opioid epidemic and risk mitigation by addressing the challenge of balancing the opioid crisis with the need for adequate pain relief, emphasizing responsible prescribing and risk mitigation. The graduate-prepared RN has a critical role in pain management by performing comprehensive assessments, advocating for effective pain treatment, ensuring safe prescribing, and providing compassionate care to prevent suffering.
