Developing appropriate functional, patient-centered goals is a critical component of demonstrating the medical necessity and skilled need for occupational therapy services. Goals should be documented in terms of functional outcomes that are relevant and meaningful to the patient and, if applicable, the caregiver. In addition, goals must be written to align with patient presentation, considering the patient's expected progression and timeline. This module provides occupational therapists with an understanding of how to structure functional goals, using case studies and examples to enhance goal-writing skills.

Christopher Meketansky OTR/L graduated from Stony Brook University in 2017 with a Master of Science Degree in Occupational Therapy.
