Frequently performed tasks, like population or security counts, present the most opportunity for mistakes, especially in dynamic environments such as custodial facilities. Complacency on the part of staff and deception used by youth in custody can contribute to errors in population counts, leading to dangerous outcomes. Staff must take the task of population counts seriously and follow the protocols set forth by their agencies. The goal of this course is to provide general information to staff working in adult facilities about conducting effective population counts.
