Capnography captures end-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO2) in all four breathing phases, making it a valuable measurement for healthcare professionals practicing in emergency, acute, operative, post-operative, and ICU settings. ETCO2 is sometimes referred to as the “other” vital sign. Healthcare professionals such as registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, and speech-language pathologists should have a clear understanding of the values identified with ETCO2, as they are critical indicators of patient status and prognosis. This course will review the basics of capnography, how to identify normal and abnormal values, and the application of this information to a patient’s clinical presentation.

Cahill, MS/RRT-NPS, earned his Master of Science degree in vocational and technical education from State University of New York (SUNY) Oswego and his bachelor’s degree in cardiopulmonary science from SUNY Health Science Center in Syracuse, New York. He has worked as an assistant professor and clinical coordinator of respiratory care at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse. Susan Almon-Matangos, MS/CCC-SLP, is a certified and licensed speech-language pathologist with over 30 years of experience. She obtained her bachelor's degree in psychology from Jacksonville State University and her Master of Science degree in speech-language pathology from The University of Alabama. She worked with clients of all ages and a variety of diagnostic conditions in school, hospital, skilled nursing facility, outpatient clinic, and home health settings. In her previous role as a national clinical director for Aegis Therapies, she created training programs for physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology related to the clinical rehabilitation needs of older adults in post-acute care.
