Many of the people you provide care to are older adults with multiple chronic conditions. The combination of multiple conditions may interfere with older adults’ chewing, swallowing, and digestive function. Individuals with cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer's disease or dementia may no longer know how to eat or swallow. These conditions create difficulty for maintaining a healthy nutritional status. This course discusses standard alternative feeding methods, such as intravenous therapy, enteral nutrition, and total parenteral nutrition. It also discusses the role of the direct care worker when caring for people who are receiving alternative feeding methods.
