Sensory Processing Disorder in Children 

Sensory processing disorder (SPD) is a neurological condition where multisensory input is not adequately processed to meet the demands of the environment. The understanding of SPD and successful treatment strategies in pediatric therapy has evolved significantly over recent years. This course guides physical and occupational therapy professionals through the process of identifying and assessing children with this condition. Current evidence-based treatment ideas and activity progression to address sensory integration dysfunction are presented.

The goal of this educational module is to provide physical and occupational therapy professionals with knowledge of how to evaluate and treat sensory processing disorder in children.

Donna completed her Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy from East Carolina University in December 1990. She has extensive pediatric experience in both school- based, outpatient clinic, preschool, daycare, home health, and teletherapy settings throughout the course of her career. Significant knowledge and expertise in treating developmental delays, autism, cerebral palsy, and congenital abnormalities with children in various settings from infancy to high school age level have been her primary focus. Sami graduated with honors from the University of Pittsburgh’s Master of Occupational Therapy program in 2014. She is a pediatric occupational therapist specializing in toddlers and school-aged children with challenges in sensory processing, gross and fine motor skills, self-regulation, emotional regulation, and attention. Sami has experience working in early intervention, home therapy, school-based therapy, and the private practice clinical setting. She has worked with children with a range of diagnoses included those with ASD, ADHD, SPD, genetic disorders, as well as children with developmental delays and learning disabilities. She has continued to build on her skill set and knowledge of SPD. In 2018 she completed the Sensory Processing Level 1 Mentorship at the SPD Star Center.
