Advanced Practice in Treating Individuals with Co-Occurring Disorders

Advanced Practice in Treating Individuals with Co-Occurring Disorders

The lifetime prevalence rate for the development of a substance use disorder (SUD) among individuals diagnosed with a mental illness is about 50%. Similarly, individuals who are diagnosed with SUDs are more likely to also be diagnosed with a mental illness (National Institute on Drug Abuse [NIDA], 2018). Co-occurring disorders (CODs) increase the severity of symptoms, complicate the recovery process, and lead to other negative outcomes like poor treatment adherence, higher dropout rates (NIDA, 2018), increased risk of suicide, and greater risk of relapse (Abroms & Sher, 2016). This course will describe the co-occurrence of substance use disorders with schizophrenia spectrum disorders, bipolar disorders, and depressive disorders. Collectively, these disorders comprise those generally referred to as serious mental illness and have a much higher risk of COD. Approximately one in four individuals with serious mental illness will also experience an SUD (NIDA, 2018). The relationship between substance use disorders and posttraumatic stress disorder will be examined, as these disorders also frequently occur together. Ample evidence exists to document the superiority of integrated treatment approaches for CODs, rather than addressing individual disorders with separate approaches, treatment plans, and even providers (Kelly & Daley, 2013). This course assumes that you have a foundational knowledge of evidence-based techniques and approaches for working with CODs, such as motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral interventions, relapse prevention, etc. The course will provide you with information about modifications you can make to these approaches when working with particular populations. However, any treatment provided should still emphasize an integrated, multidisciplinary team approach that addresses the full range of the person’s needs. If you need more in-depth information about these treatment methods, search the Relias course catalog for additional trainings on these topics.
