In the literature on evidence-based medicine, a clinical pathways system is presented as a comprehensive treatment model that targets the specific strategies associated with a homogeneous patient group, in this case, adolescents with substance use disorder. Clinical pathways in medicine address the high risks involved when managing patient care. The system includes three major facets: (1) a method for understanding the major features of the disease that requires treatment, including understanding the etiology of the disease; (2) treatment planning using standards for clinical practice and the organization of necessary resources, and finally, (3) treatment methods, including the application of evidence-based treatment for the disease.
