Clinical Prediction Rules: Application in Selecting Interventions for Patients with Low Back Pain

Green Clock Hours: 1.00

Numerous clinical trials have investigated the effectiveness of interventions for low back pain (LBP). Despite the magnitude of research in this area, the evidence remains somewhat inconclusive for many of the common interventions. All patients with LBP are unique; thus, it is not reasonable to expect that all patients will benefit from identical interventions. Matching patients with interventions from which they are likely to benefit has been advocated as a method to improve the power of investigation. This module reviews the evolutionary history of clinical prediction rules (CPRs), the methodological standards for developing CPRs, and the hierarchy of evidence for applying CPRs in clinical practice. The CPRs currently in use for the management of patients with LBP are discussed.

The goal of this educational program is to provide physical therapy professionals with an understanding of how to use clinical prediction rules for patients with LBP.
