Learning Objectives:
Understand and distinguish between the terms, substance abuse and
chemical dependency.
Discover that addiction is a chronic and complex disease which may
be effectively treated and managed.
Be able to differentiate between alcohol dependence and alcohol
abuse.
Comprehend the negative health effects through the misuse of alcohol,
tobacco, marijuana, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, prescription
and OTC drugs.
Identify symptoms of withdrawal from specific substances.
Be able to distinguish between the types of therapies available to
substance abusers.
Identify a patient with a substance abuse problem.
Recognize the effect substance abuse has on families and the relative
cost to society.
