Best Practices in Alcohol Use Disorder Assessment and Treatment

Excessive alcohol use accounts for 88,000 deaths in the United States each year. Almost 1 in 10 deaths in adults are related in some way to misuse of alcohol (Centers for Disease Control [CDC], n.d.). In 2016, over 10,000 Americans were killed in motor vehicle crashes while driving under the influence of alcohol (U.S. Department of Transportation, 2017). However, deaths related to alcohol are just the tip of the iceberg. Many hundreds of thousands more suffer mental health and medical consequences from unhealthy alcohol use with considerable societal and financial costs (Sacks, Gonzales, Bouchery, Tomedi & Brewer, 2015). The negative consequences of excessive alcohol use are not limited to the U.S. In Canada there were more hospitalizations from 2015-2016 related to excessive alcohol use than for heart disease (Canadian Institute for Health Information, 2017). In spite of this, dangerous alcohol use is often overlooked in medical and mental health treatment settings for a number of reasons. It may be due to a lack of knowledge of what makes for dangerous alcohol use, what symptoms might look like, how to motivate individuals to seek and continue with treatment, and familiarity with effective interventions. The goal of this course is to help you to gain knowledge in recognizing, diagnosing, and treating alcohol use disorders (AUD) in your clients.
