How to become culturally competent • Understand your own cultural background • Avoid negative attitudes, stereotypes and generalizations • The use of cultural assessment tools • Asking open-ended questions that are general in nature • Learn about the history of the person you are caring for • Read about different cultures • Attend cultural events • Learn a few words of the person’s language 11. Treat people the way that they want to be treated (Platinum Rule)
