Intentional self-harming behaviors are a common, though maladaptive, coping strategy used by many youth. As such, clinicians commonly encounter such behaviors while treating young people with mental health disorders. Unfortunately, many clinicians lack adequate training to effectively address these behaviors and resort to ineffective approaches. The lack of confidence to intervene effectively, coupled with limited understanding about the function of self-harm, often translates to negative attitudes among healthcare providers toward individuals who engage in self-injury. Such individuals may be viewed with hostility or assumed to be manipulative or attention-seeking. Providers have also assumed that individuals who self-injure are “time wasters” and will continue to engage in the behavior even if concerted efforts to intervene are made (Shaw & Sandy, 2016). Obviously, such attitudes have tremendous potential to negatively impact the therapeutic relationship, and ultimately, treatment outcomes for individuals who engage in self-injurious behaviors. This course is designed to help licensed clinicians understand why children, adolescents, and transitional age youth engage in nonsuicidal self-injury. You will learn to recognize “red flags” for nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) as well as methods to thoroughly assess the unique function and consequences that maintain self-injurious behaviors in your clients. Bridgett Ross, Psy.D. received her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from Alliant International University at the San Diego campus. She completed pre-doctoral internships at Children's Hospital Chadwick Center for Children and Families where she provided psychotherapy to children who had experience trauma. She also completed a pre-doctoral internship at Kaiser Permanente, which included diverse training in working with adults and children using evidence-based practices. Upon graduation, Dr. Ross worked for 4 years at the Department of Veterans Affairs conducting PTSD assessments and psychotherapy with military veterans and active duty service members. Monique Kahn, Psy.D. received her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from Nova Southeastern University in Florida.
