Family Therapy in Substance Use Treatment 

This course will address the effects of substance use on the entire family unit as well as patterns of behavior among family members in relationship to the identified client. The course will provide an overview of evidence-based substance use screening and assessment tools. The course will further discuss best-practice substance use treatment and family therapy approaches as well as review codependency patterns and systems theory in addressing substance use in the family system.

Gabriel Maeck is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who has served over 3,000 clients as a diagnostician and psychotherapist. He has worked with children, teenagers, high-risk adults with comorbid mental and substance use disorders, refugees, and members of the geriatric population. He has provided services in school, community, long-term care, and inpatient substance abuse treatment settings. He has experience advocating for Somali- and Swahili-speaking communities, becoming fluent in Swahili and highly proficient in Somali to do so. He has presented at TedX and mental health symposium events. He is now pursuing a Master of Business Administration to focus on healthcare reform.

Dr. Keith Klostermann is an Assistant Professor in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Marriage and Family Therapy programs at Medaille College in Buffalo, NY. He is an internationally-recognized expert in the use of Behavioral Couples Therapy for Substance Use Disorders (BCT-SUD). Dr. Klostermann is licensed as both a mental health counselor and marriage and family therapist, is an AAMFT Approved Supervisor, and is recognized as a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC) and certified family therapist (CFT). Most recently, Dr. Klostermann was recognized as a Diplomate and Clinical Mental Counseling Specialist in both Couples and Family Counseling and Military Counseling by the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA).
