Use of the AOTA Practice Framework Language

 

Therapists often find it challenging to use language from the AOTA practice framework to clearly articulate the skilled aspect of treatment. Some therapists have gotten too general with terminology and have lost the ability to clearly articulate on paper what was assessed and treated during therapy that required the skill of a therapist. In most cases, therapists are performing comprehensive, individualized treatment, but if documentation is reviewed from patient to patient, it is too redundant and does not show why another professional could not have performed the therapy session. Occupational therapists should use the language from the practice framework to communicate both the areas of concern for a patient and the ways that those areas were addressed in a skilled manor from an occupational therapist, and how only an occupational therapist could carry out the treatment. Failure to do so can result in denial of payment having financial ramifications for the organization in which the therapist works.

Instructor: Bryan M. Gee, PhD, OTD, OTR/L, BCP
Dr. Gee holds degrees from Idaho State University (Phd & MEd), University of St. Augustine (OTD) and D'Youville College (BS/MS). Dr. Gee currently is AOTA Board Certification in Pediatrics, is certified in the Sensory Integration Praxis Test, Level I, II, and III Certified the Sensory Processing Disorder Foundation, and an ULEND alumni. He is the Chair of the Department of Physical and Occupational Therapy, Director of the Master of Occupational Therapy Program and Associate Professor at Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho. Dr. Gee has published over 18 peer-reviewed research articles related to sensory-based interventions, dosage and therapy related practice patterns, and parent education/training and sensory processing. Dr. Gee has held various volunteer positions with AOTA and NBCOT, and currently is the represents Idaho within AOTA's Representative Assembly. Disclosure: Bryan M.
