This course is designed to describe the home safety hazards and challenges facing older adults and to offer solutions in the form of adaptive equipment and modifications for the outdoor environment. It will describe the common cognitive, physical, and visual impairments older adults face as they age and how these issues lead to injuries and loss of independence when traveling outdoors or performing community mobility. The course will highlight the factors to consider when helping the older adult navigate the outdoor environment safely. Finally, it will present brief case scenarios and offer solutions for selecting strategies, adaptations, and equipment for helping the older adult navigate outdoor terrain safely.

Tameika McLean is an occupational therapist based in the Washington, DC metro area. She has worked in the acute care, acute rehabilitation, subacute rehabilitation/skilled nursing, and outpatient settings. She is also a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) and will soon earn the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Low Vision certificate.
