SBIRT: Screening and Interventions for Individuals with Substance Use Issues 

Professionals in a variety of healthcare settings witness the consequences experienced by individuals who engage in excessive drinking or drug use. Integrating Screening and Brief Intervention and Referral for Treatment (SBIRT) in a general medical setting can provide early identification and treatment to individuals engaging in risky alcohol and substance use who many not be seeking services otherwise. This course will discuss the core components of the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment model, the most common screening tools used, and how the basic philosophy, principles, and techniques of motivational interviewing and stages of change apply to SBIRT. The content for this course is applicable to clinical psychologists, licensed clinical social workers, alcohol and drug counselors, professional counselors, and nurses in health and human services, health systems, and community health, and long-term care settings. Bruce Horwitz, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Missouri’s School of Medicine where he has worked on a number of grants related to integrating screening and brief interventions for substance misuse into general health care. Dr. Horwitz also has had extensive experience providing and administering community mental health services.
