Serious Mental Illness and Respiratory Disease

Serious Mental Illness and Respiratory Disease

People with severe mental illness (SMI) have a higher prevalence of respiratory diseases than the general population and often have worse health outcomes due to their respiratory disease. Many factors contribute to worsened physical and mental health outcomes in individuals with co-morbid SMI and respiratory disease, including genetics, lifestyle choices, poor access to and quality of care, smoking, and in many cases, poor adherence to medication which may be attributable to some level of cognitive impairment. Self-management and behavioral change, often difficult in people with SMI, are integral components of caring for respiratory disease. This course is designed for behavioral health professionals who work with individuals with SMI. You will learn ways to assist your clients in managing COPD and other respiratory diseases. You will gain some insight into how to help your clients improve general health and impact their quality of life.
