This course will describe specific risks related to opioid use in the aging population and address the need for increased screening of older adults in medical settings regarding substance use and abuse. It will discuss the “SBIRT” model of intervention (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment) along with other simple and useful techniques that this presenter has found through trial and error over the past ten years of screening adults and elders in medical practices.

Instructor: Sandi Gray-Terry, MSW, LCSW

Sandi Gray-Terry, MSW, LCSW is a psychiatric social worker who received her MSW from Smith College School for Social Work.  Trained across age and disabilities, her internship years were at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, and the Division of Child Psychiatry at Duke in NC.  She has worked in Community Mental Health, private practice, for Community Care of North Carolina as a Palliative Care Coordinator and Transitional Care Coordinator, and as an Integrated Care Clinician in Primary Care and Community Health.  Currently, she is self-employed as a Geriatric Care Consultant, and she loves working with elders and their families to help elders remain at home.
