Biopsychosocial Model of Addiction

Substance use problems represent a serious health concern in the United States, resulting in the deaths of more than 100,000 Americans each year. Tobacco use is related to an estimated 480,000 death each year. Especially alarming has been the number of deaths by overdose from illicit drugs and the doubling of the number of deaths by synthetic or prescription opioids to over 64,000 in 2016. That number continues to increase at an alarming rate according to the National Center for Health Statistics using provisional counts of deaths for 2017 (CDC WONDER database September 2017).

Based on content from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), as well the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), this course provides you an overview of the biopsychosocial model of addiction. This approach emphasizes the interplay of biological, psychological, and social factors that contribute to addiction.

The material in this training covers basic information about the various types of drugs that individuals may use and walks you through the stages of addiction. An in-depth look at risk factors and treatment options offers both new and seasoned clinicians critical information needed to identify who may be at risk for addiction, as well as detailed guidelines for how you can assist clients to engage in the recovery process. The blend of interactive exercises and detailed examples help make the instructive information in this course a key building block to applying these core competencies in your own setting.
