Withholding and Withdrawing Treatments

Withholding and Withdrawing Treatments

Withholding and withdrawing treatments has become a prominent issue in healthcare as the numbers of interventions for advanced disease have increased. Tension may exist between the autonomy of an individual and the autonomous medical practice of their provider. Medical futility and the individual’s desire for a quality of life that is consistent with their values are frequent themes in advanced disease. In this course, you will explore the ethical principles guiding decision-making to withhold or withdraw treatments. You will also review aspects of culture and spiritual practices that may influence an individual to elect or refuse treatments. Finally, you will consider issues surrounding withholding or withdrawing specific interventions and how to help manage symptoms to improve quality of life once a specific treatment is eliminated.
