Rapid Review: Assessing Heart Sounds

Green Clock Hours: 0.50

Welcome to this course on Assessing Heart Sounds! Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in the United States. For this reason, assessment of the cardiovascular (cardiac) system is critical to the health of those individuals you care for. Assessing heart sounds is an important component to any cardiac exam. It can identify the presence of a variety of cardiac conditions including valvular heart disease, congestive heart failure, and congenital heart lesions. Heart sounds are assessed by auscultating, or listening to, the heart. Auscultation of the heart allows you to assess the heart rate and rhythm, as well as identify the presence of any abnormal heart sounds. All nurses, regardless of care setting, need to be able to recognize both normal heart sounds and the presence of abnormal sounds, which must then be reported for further evaluation.
