Juvenile interview and interrogation processes are undergoing unprecedented changes in many states. We are learning that juveniles are particularly prone to give false information, and even false confessions, when questioned by peace officers. As such, court decisions are leading police to question juveniles differently than adults. Interview and interrogation is standard training for law enforcement agencies. However, it typically does not cover the developmental differences between adults and youths, nor does it cover recommended techniques for interviewing and interrogating juvenile offenders. Juveniles, due to their age and development differences, are handled differently from adults when they are being processed by the legal system. The information provided in this course contains best practices to ensure fairness and compassion when conducting juvenile interviews and interrogations, while still accomplishing the objectives of the interview or interrogation process. We also provide an overview of the issues, latest research, and legal developments related to questioning juveniles.
