Patient Rights: Home Care and Hospice

Patient Rights: Home Care and Hospice

Each day we ‘exercise’ our rights; we use them, ask for them, and expect them. They allow us to enjoy privileges that make our lives better. Using “free speech” allows us to freely express our opinion. Having “self-determination” allows us to independently make our own decisions. These rights are easily taken for granted as they are so automatic in our daily lives. These same rights are meant to be for everyone, including those in our care. It is our responsibility as healthcare professionals to know what our patients’ rights are and to respect them and ensure they are protected. It is perhaps the most important thing we do in home care and hospice!
