Stroke Rehab: Roles and Interventions to Promote Best Practices for the Rehab Team

Stroke causes disability more often than any other neurological condition and rehabilitation facilities treat more stroke patients than any other type of neurological patient. Even with significant medical advances, stroke remains the leading cause of disability worldwide (50 million people cope with the physical, cognitive, and emotional deficits). Much research has been focused on stroke prevention and early emergency management at Primary Stroke Centers and positive advancements in patient care at Comprehensive Stroke Centers. Regardless of the healthcare setting, every nurse and therapist will provide care or therapy for a stroke patient in their career. In all these settings, it is vital to apply evidence-based standards and guidelines to your stroke patients allowing for the best possible outcomes. This webinar offers a multidisciplinary approach to providing optimal care to this population. This module will bring attention to the rehabilitation team interventions and strategies which have been documented as promoting medical and functional stroke outcomes by nurses, respiratory therapists and PTs, OTs, and SLP therapists. LPNs, NPs, and Case Managers are also part of the target audience. Updated best practices will be presented for stroke rehabilitation utilizing the presenters clinical expertise as well as accreditation standards from CARF (Commission on Accreditation for Rehabilitation Facilities) and CMS plus guidelines from the AHA/ASA (American Heart Association/American Stroke Association) and ARN (Association for Rehabilitation Nurses.) All stroke patients with Functional, ADL, Cognitive and Communication issues should have the opportunity to be involved in rehabilitation. Prevention, early intervention, and rehabilitation make measurable differences in the life of the stroke survivors and their caregivers. Disclosures: Susan Greco, RN, MSN, CRRN has no relevant financial or nonfinancial relationships to disclose.
