Identifying and Preventing Dependent Adult Abuse and Neglect

The CDC (2013) estimates that today’s older adult population in the United States is unparalleled in both number and proportion. In fact, by 2050 the CDC calculates that Americans aged 65 or older will approximate 89 million people, more than double that in 2010 (CDC, 2013). Elder abuse has been called the hidden crime. In 2008, one in ten older adults reported emotional, physical, or sexual mistreatment or potential neglect in the past year (Acierno et al., 2010). This course identifies the most common types of abuse and neglect of older and dependent adults and provides strategies for effective intervention. You will learn how to recognize the most common signs and symptoms of physical, emotional, and behavioral dependent adult abuse. You also will learn strategies for preventing such abuse, as well as how to report cases of suspected dependent adult abuse and how to work most effectively with adults who may have experienced abuse or neglect.
